Start Low, Go Slow: Dosing Your First Delta 9 Gummy

A practical first-timer guide to a 20 mg Delta 9 gummy: how to ease in, how long to wait, and how to find your line.

Every Budbo gummy is 20 mg of Delta 9 THC. For an experienced consumer, that is a full, satisfying dose. For someone who has never tried an edible, it is more than they need on day one. This guide is for the second group: how to ease in, how long to wait, and how to find the amount that fits you.

Why edibles feel different from smoking

When you smoke or vaporize flower, THC reaches your bloodstream through the lungs and you feel it within minutes. When you eat a gummy, the THC goes through your digestive system and your liver first, where a portion of it is converted into a related compound called 11-hydroxy-THC. Two things follow from that:

  1. Onset is slow. Commonly 30 minutes to two hours, depending on what you have eaten, your metabolism, and your body.
  2. The effect lasts longer and can feel stronger than the same amount smoked. Four to eight hours is a normal window.

Almost every bad edible story has the same plot: someone felt nothing after 45 minutes, took a second dose, and then both arrived at once. The rule that prevents that story is the title of this article.

The starting dose

If you have never had an edible, start with a quarter of a gummy (5 mg). If you have some experience, half a gummy (10 mg) is a reasonable place to begin. A whole 20 mg piece is for people who already know how 10 mg feels and want more.

Our gummies are easy to cut cleanly with a knife. Cut on a plate, not in your hand, and put the rest back in the package.

The waiting rule

Wait at least two hours before taking more. Not one hour. Not "I feel a little something so I will take another half." Two full hours, ideally three the first time.

Set a timer. Eat something. Put on a movie. The gummy is working whether or not you can feel it yet, and the only way to know what 5 mg does for you is to let 5 mg finish.

If two hours pass and you are comfortable but would like a little more, take another quarter. Then wait again. Building up in small steps on one evening is fine; stacking doses because you are impatient is how people end up on the couch wishing they had not.

Pick the gummy for the moment

Each of our three gummies is built around a different part of the day. The dose is the same, but the character is not, and the first one you try should match what you want to be doing.

  • Day Breaker is sativa-based, made for uplifting, clear-headed energy. A weekend afternoon, a walk, music with friends.
  • Alpha Euphoric is hybrid-based, built for a balanced headspace that moves with you. Not too up, not too down.
  • Night Crawler is indica-based, built for deep relaxation and an easy landing. Evening, not morning.

For a first experience, most people do best starting in the evening with nothing on the calendar, which points toward Night Crawler or Alpha Euphoric. Save Day Breaker for once you know your dose.

Set the scene

The setting shapes the experience as much as the milligrams do. A few things that consistently help:

  • Eat first. A normal meal beforehand smooths out the onset. An empty stomach makes it faster and sharper.
  • Hydrate. Keep water nearby. Dry mouth is the most common side effect and the easiest to manage.
  • Be somewhere comfortable with people you trust, or on your own with nothing you need to do.
  • Do not drive or operate anything with a motor. Plan to be exactly where you are for the rest of the evening.
  • Skip the alcohol. Combining the two makes the effects of both harder to predict.

If you take too much

It happens, and it passes. THC is not known to cause a fatal overdose, but too much can bring on anxiety, a racing heart, dizziness or nausea. If that is where you find yourself:

  • Remind yourself that it is temporary and will wear off.
  • Move to a quiet, dim room. Lie down if you want to.
  • Drink water and, if you can, eat something small.
  • Breathe slowly. Long exhales help.
  • Tell whoever you are with. Company helps more than people expect.

Sleep is usually the end of the story. The next morning may feel a little foggy, and that fades too. Note what you took, and take less next time.

Finding your number

After a couple of sessions you will have a clear sense of where your line is. Some people are happiest at 5 mg indefinitely. Some settle at 10. Some find that the full 20 mg gummy is exactly right. None of those answers is more correct than the others; the right dose is the one that gives you the evening you wanted.

Once you know it, the Gummy Set lets you keep all three on hand for whatever the day calls for.

Keep them out of reach

Gummies look like candy because they are candy. Store them sealed, labelled, and somewhere children and pets cannot get to them. Never leave a cut piece out on the counter.

Budbo gummies are hemp-derived Delta 9 THC edibles compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill. For adults 21 and over. Do not drive or operate machinery after use. Consult a physician before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication. This article is general guidance, not medical advice.
