Reading a COA: What the Numbers Actually Mean

Decode THCA %, Delta 9 %, and the rest of the panel, and understand why full-panel, third-party lab results are the only proof worth trusting.

Every jar and every bag of gummies we sell ships from a batch that went through an independent, accredited lab first. The report that comes back is a Certificate of Analysis, or COA. It is the only document that turns "trust us" into "check for yourself," and once you know how to read one, you will never buy hemp flower without asking for it again.

This guide walks through a COA the way we read them internally: what each section is telling you, which numbers actually matter, and the red flags that mean a report is not worth the PDF it is printed on.

What a COA is, and what it is not

A COA is a lab report tied to one specific batch of product. It records what an independent lab found when it tested a sample from that batch: how much of each cannabinoid is present, and whether anything that should not be there (pesticides, heavy metals, mold, leftover solvents) showed up.

It is not a marketing document, and it is not a guarantee about a different batch. A COA for last spring's Sour Diesel says nothing about the eighth in your hand unless the batch numbers match. That is why every Budbo batch gets its own report, and why the numbers on our COA page are labelled as representative rather than universal.

Section one: potency

This is the panel everyone flips to first, and it is where most of the confusion lives.

THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the cannabinoid that raw hemp flower actually contains. On its own it is not intoxicating. When you apply heat, whether that is a lighter, a vaporizer, or an oven, THCA sheds a carboxyl group and becomes Delta 9 THC. That reaction is called decarboxylation, and it is the reason flower that tests at 25% THCA can feel the way it does.

Delta 9 THC is the number that determines whether the product is legally hemp. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is cannabis with no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight. All three of our flowers sit well under that line.

Total THC is a calculated figure some labs print, usually THCA multiplied by 0.877 plus the Delta 9 figure. The 0.877 accounts for the weight lost during decarboxylation. It is a useful estimate of what you would get after heating, but it is not the number federal law looks at. If a lab prints it, read it as context, not compliance.

Minor cannabinoids such as CBG, CBGA, CBC and CBD often show up in small amounts. Some labs report them, some only report what is above their detection limit. A row that says "ND" (not detected) or "<LOQ" (below the limit of quantitation) is normal and is not a warning sign.

For our gummies the potency panel is simpler. Each piece is dosed at 20 mg of Delta 9 THC, and the COA confirms the milligrams per piece and per package. Look for the per-piece figure to be close to the label, because that is what your dose is actually built on.

Section two: the safety panels

Potency tells you how strong the product is. The rest of the report tells you whether it is clean. A full-panel COA should include all of these:

  • Pesticides. A list of specific compounds, each with a detected value and an action limit. Every row should read "pass."
  • Heavy metals. Usually arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. Hemp is a bioaccumulator, meaning it pulls metals out of soil, so this panel matters more for flower than for almost any other agricultural product.
  • Microbials. Total yeast and mold, E. coli, salmonella, and sometimes aspergillus species. Flower that was dried or stored badly fails here.
  • Residual solvents. Mostly relevant to extracts, but a full panel runs it on everything.
  • Mycotoxins and foreign matter on the most thorough reports.

A report that only shows a potency panel is a potency test, not a full-panel COA. It answers "how strong" and skips "is it safe." We do not sell from batches that only have the first half of that answer.

The details that separate a real report from a decoration

Beyond the numbers, a trustworthy COA has a few structural features. Check for them every time.

  1. The lab's name and accreditation. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is the standard for testing labs. The lab should be a real third party with a real address, not the brand's own in-house numbers.
  2. A batch or lot number that matches the one on the packaging.
  3. Dates. A sample received date and a report date. Old reports on new product are a quiet way to recycle a good result.
  4. A sample description that matches the product. Flower should be listed as flower, not as an extract.
  5. A method reference such as HPLC for potency or LC-MS/MS for pesticides. You do not need to understand the methods, but their presence means the lab is documenting its work.
  6. A signature or QR verification. Many labs host their reports online so you can confirm the PDF was not edited.

If a seller cannot produce a report with those elements, the honest answer is that you do not know what you are buying.
